Strokes Gained: Approach The Green Best and Worst – PGA TOUR 2019

Hello friends! A few weeks we took a glance at Strokes Gained statistics and how the top 10 in each category translated into money and wins. Over the next few weeks we are going to take a deeper dive into each of the five categories from our original Strokes Gained post.

This second edition is Strokes Gained: Approach the Green best and worst. We will take a look at the 10 players with the greatest improvement from 2018 to 2019 and the 10 players with the greatest drop from 2018 to 2019. You can always check out:

Strokes Gained: Off the Tee Best and Worst.

As with last week, money if “official” money earned and does not include any bonus money such as FedEx Cup bonuses. Also, the standard disclaimer, data provided by Shotlink does not include Major Championships as the PGA TOUR does not run any of them.

Let’s see how this shakes out.

For Better or Worse

Some interesting observations:

  • Jonas Blixt wast the only player from the SGT most improved list to make the top 10 on the SGAPG most improved list.
  • Both Jordan Spieth and Francesco Molinari appeared on the largest drops in SGT and SGAPG.
  • Average money list position for most improved SGAPG is 76th, SGT, 77th.
  • Average money list position for largest drops SGAPG is 105th, SGT, 103rd. Incredible synergies in both statistical categories.
  • Average gain among top 10 was +0.538 strokes, average drop in bottom 10 was -0.463.
  • Three of the most improved in SGAPG missed the FEC Playoffs while five of the largest droppers missed.
  • Two wins for most improved (Poston and Kisner), three wins for largest drops (Mickelson, Molinari, Johnson) that’s wild man!

That about sums up Strokes Gained: Approach the Green best and worst for 2019. This data is showing me one thing for sure, it seems like everyone makes at least $1M. Keep an eye out for our analysis of Strokes Gained: Around The Green over the next several days. I’m sure we’ll find some more mind blowing revelations.
